Publication: The Platformisation of Cancel Culture, Farries, Siapera and Kerrigan
18. 10. 2024. Centre co-directors, Dr Elizabeth Farries, Prof Eugenia Siapera and member Párraic Kerrigan have recently published the introduction to their timely Special Issue on Cancel Culture for the Television and New Media journal.
This introduction focuses on the platformisation of cancel culture and the roles of social networking sites in faciliating “polarized reactionary and or strategic networked publics in the context of digital politics and the (re)emergence of the culture wars.”
The Special Issue welcomes interventions into our knowledge of cancel culture and its mechanisns from:
- Shangran Jin and Gwen Bouvier from Shanghai International Studies University on the widely discussed case of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp;
- Michele White of Tulane Unviersity discussig the Try Guys and their brand;
- Michael M Reinhard of Emory Univeristy, Atlanta, who highlight anti-queer activism and its relationship to cancel culture;
- Daniel Jurg, Marc tuters and Ike Picone who write on cancel culture in relation to “reactionary fandom” and Alex Jones’ conspiracy theories;
- Nicola Bozzi’s chapter discusses Joe Rogan’s brand of comedy and his role as an “uncalcellable” skeptic;
- Jinsook Kim addresses the anti-feminist hijacking of cancel culture in Souoth Korea in his article;
- Eve Ng’s reflects in their article on participation and ideologies linked to cancel culture;
- Eve Ng and Xiaomeng Li use their article to discuss the constructions of cancel culture in China;
- and, finally, Lasade-anderson and Sobande examine black feminist conceptualisations of cancel culture.
