Panel on AI Standardisation and Policy Making

24.10.24. Yesterday, alongside co-hosts ADAPT, the Centre hosted its first panel of the academic year on AI and Standards with experts from the National Standards Authority (NSAI) and ADAPT.

We welcomed Aditya Mohan from the NSAI, Prof Dave Lewis and Dr Harshvardhan J Pandit from the ADAPT SFI Centre to discuss the importance and difficulties of AI Standardisation, interoperability and the AI Act.

Adiyta from NSAI opened the discussion with an introduction to the standards pipeline for AI, detailing the treatment of bias, including unwanted bias.

Prof Lewis described the application of the risk-based AI Act, outlining its co-regulatory approach for AI value chain actors and stakeholders.

Dr Pandit shared research on how the AI Act requires a Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment, comparing obligations therein to preceding GDPR DPIA.

Overall it was a great overview of how standards are evolving with new AI technologies and law. We extend our warm thanks to Adi, Dave and Harsh for sharing their knowledge with us!
