Edemilson Paraná is Associate Professor in Sociology at University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, and part-time Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at LUT University, Finland, where he also holds the title of Docent in the Political Economy of AI and Digital Technologies. He holds a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant and is an Academy Research Fellow of the Research Council of Finland (RCF). Beyond his membership of the UCD Centre for Digital Policy, he is also a Geary Fellow at the UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy and an International Fellow at the University of Groningen’s Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development, the Netherlands.

His research focuses on the political economy of the digital finance, artificial intelligence, and emerging neurotechnologies. His work has been published in Big Data & Society, New Political Economy, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Third World Quarterly, Globalizations, Platforms & Society, among others, and has been featured in media outlets across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He serves on the editorial or advisory boards of The Yearbook on Data Autonomy, Historical Materialism, and Global Political Economy.
