Submission to the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offence Bill

June 2021. Read our Centre’s co-director Liz Farries’s submission to the Committee Stage of the The Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offence Bill 2017. She says:

“By proposing this Bill, Deputy Howlin has recognised the gravity of image-based sexual abuse and has taken on board some of the 2016 research and recommendations of the Law Reform Commission. Legislation directed specifically at image-based sexual abuse will address a clear gap in the existing legal framework. Such legislation will also send a clear signal that this type of abuse is unacceptable in our society. Recent revelations of image-based sexual abuse in Ireland underline the importance and urgency of passing this Bill. Reports from other jurisdictions indicate that this problem continues to grow as technology increasingly dominates every aspect of our lives. For victims of this abuse, this law can’t come soon enough.”
