When Fact-Checking Is Not WEIRD

December 2023. Centre Team Member Marco Bastos and his PhD student Otávio Vinhas have authored an article on factchecking frameworks outside of WEIRD countries. Data collected with thirty-seven fact-checking experts from thirty-five organizations in twenty-seven countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, combined with insights from literature in the area, reveals that the prevailing framework of fact-checking underplays the social and historical dimensions driving disinformation and propaganda.
